bridget in hawaii

A few months back we took some time and visited the big island of Hawaii.  We swam a lot, but on one day in particular, we were snorkeling, floating silently above the sea life that peacefully passed below us when we were suddenly moving… FAST.   We hadn’t drifted any further out, but this current was like a river.  I watched as the sea floor below us sped up, I kicked harder trying to return to shore.  I had a moment of shear panic, I looked over at Bridget and in that second, through my fogged up goggles, I saw that she was a bit nervous but not panicked.  So we kept kicking and finally made it to shore about a 1/4 mile from where we started.  Life this year has felt a lot like that day in the ocean.  At times I feel like I’m peacefully moving through life methodically checking things off my “to-do” lists and actually having time to enjoy it.  At others I feel as thought someone has pushed the fast forward button,  weeks pass in a blink, and I’m left wondering where the time went, and whether or not I’ll accomplish what I need to in the time I have remaining.  Life is like that, it ebbs and flows.  Thankfully whenever it gets a little too crazy or I feel like everything is out of my control and I begin to panic, I have someone I can look to who with one look can calm me and remind me that it will all be just fine as long as we just keep swimming…

This trip to Idaho, was my first time inside Molly and Dan’s new home.  As I walked around it, the first thing I noticed, were the photos, everywhere.  One entire side of their fridge was plastered with pictures of adventures and misadventures.  I smiled as I recognized trips I had been a part of, and others I could only guess at the mischief hidden within.  Their home begged to be snooped through.  Picture frames sat tucked away on bookshelves, innocently holding images packed with meaning.  It’s not often anymore that people take the time to print photos.  We have millions of them in our phones and computers, but how often do we actually turn them into something tangible.  Maybe this is one reason I  like these two so much.  They live in a different world, not a world of things but a world much more valuable, a world of memories created through experience.  They choose to be present everyday and live that day with intention.  Their wedding day was no different.  I watched as friends and family and their entire community rallied around them and helped out in any way they could.  I watched as people showed up, really showed up, not just in body, but in a way that was much more meaningful.  I watched as two of my closest friends stood beneath an old pine tree and vowed to spend the rest of their lives together.  I have no doubt that they will, because they live a life unlike most, one in which the here and now is far more important that any future maybe.  I am so happy for you both, Bridget and I feel so lucky to have been invited to show up on your wedding day.  We wish you both a lifetime of happiness…A big thank you to Bridget for being willing to pick up a camera and help me out during the ceremony…
